You can offer shoppers a discount to finish their order. Turn it on under **Settings > Email Settings > Discount Offers**, choose a percentage or a fixed amount, and save. RocketCart then creates a one-time Shopify discount code and puts it in the third recovery email.

The discount is the only part of email recovery you control. Timing, templates and content are chosen automatically. See [How email recovery works](/docs/recovery/email-recovery/).

Settings > Email Settings

Pro plan

The same tab also holds **Custom Domain Configuration**, for sending emails from your own domain. It needs the Pro plan. On the Free plan the section is blurred and shows an **Upgrade your plan** button. See [Send recovery emails from your own domain](/docs/sending-domain/set-up-sending-domain/).

## How do I turn on the discount?

1. Go to **Settings**.
2. Open the **Email Settings** tab.
3. Under **Discount Offers**, tick **Enable discount offers in emails**.
4. Under **Discount Type**, choose **Percentage** or **Fixed Amount**.
5. Enter the value in **Discount Percentage** (for example `10`) or **Discount Amount** (for example `5.00`).
6. Click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

You see **Settings saved successfully** when it worked.

To stop offering a discount, untick **Enable discount offers in emails** and click **Save**.

## What do the options mean?

| Option | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Enable discount offers in emails** | Turns the discount on or off | Off |
| **Discount Type** > **Percentage** | Takes a percentage off the order. Enter a value between 0 and 100. | Selected |
| **Discount Type** > **Fixed Amount** | Takes a fixed amount off the order | |
| **Discount Percentage** / **Discount Amount** | The size of the discount. Required when the discount is on. | Empty |

## When does the shopper get the code?

The code only goes in the **third** recovery step, the last reminder, and only when that step is an email. Shoppers who buy after the first or second reminder never see it. That way you don’t give away margin to people who were going to buy anyway.

RocketCart also tests versions of the third email with and without the discount block, and sends more of whichever recovers more carts. So not every shopper who gets a third email gets a code.

## What does the code look like?

RocketCart creates a new Shopify discount code for each shopper:

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Code | `ABANDON` followed by 5 characters |
| Valid for | 1 day. The email says it expires in 24 hours. |
| Uses | Once. When the checkout belongs to a Shopify customer, only that customer can use it |
| Minimum order | The value of the shopper’s abandoned cart |

You can see the codes in your Shopify admin under **Discounts**.

Tip

Not sure how big the discount should be, or whether to offer one at all? Read [when to offer an abandoned cart discount](/blog/the-psychology-of-discounts-when-to-offer-a-coupon/).

## What do the error messages mean?

| Message | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| **Discount value is required** | The discount is on but the value is empty. Enter a value, or untick the discount. |
| **Discount value cannot be negative** | Enter a number of 0 or more. |
| **Percentage cannot exceed 100** | Enter a percentage of 100 or less. |

Note

WhatsApp recovery messages don’t use this setting. To offer a code on WhatsApp, add a copy-code button to your WhatsApp template. See [WhatsApp recovery messages](/docs/recovery/whatsapp-recovery-messages/).
